Preparation For CoolSculpting
The first step towards undergoing CoolSculpting is a consultation with Dr. Minniti. From there, he will develop a unique treatment plan tailored to achieve your aesthetic goals. Since it is a relatively simple procedure, there isn’t much you need to do before your treatment: no specific diet/exercise plans are necessary.
Ideal Candidates For CoolSculpting
The best candidates for CoolSculpting are those with stubborn bulges of fat that resist all diet and exercise. Although the procedure successfully removes fat, it is not a major weight-loss method (such as gastric bypass surgery) and should not be used to diminish obesity.
CoolSculpting works best for those who stay committed to their health before and after the procedure through frequent exercise and a good diet, ensuring the fat in problem areas (thighs, love handles, submental area, bra/back area, underneath the buttocks, and abdomen) does not reemerge after treatment. Most people choose CoolSculpting since they want a reliable method to remove stubborn fat without the invasiveness of procedures like liposuction (surgery) or KYBELLA® (injections).

The Procedure
What to Expect During CoolSculpting
The doctor will apply the CoolSculpting machine to problem areas, and, as the cooling begins, you will likely feel pressure and intense cold. Typically, common and temporary side effects include:
- Numbness
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Aching
- Cramping
- Tenderness
- Itching
- Firmness
- Tingling
- Stinging
- Minimal Pain
However, after a few minutes, the majority of these sensations can possibly diminish, allowing you to watch television, read or work for the remainder of your treatment.
The length of your treatment will be determined by your contouring goals: the larger the fat area that you want to remove, the longer your treatment will be. Additional sessions may have to be scheduled depending on the size of the problem area, which Dr. Minniti will prescribe during your consultation. Typically, 1 to 3 treatments are ideal.
Recovery
Since this is a non-surgical procedure, you may be able to resume normal activities following your treatment. This lack of downtime makes CoolSculpting an attractive fat-reduction treatment option for those whose busy schedules don’t allow for breaks.
Risks & Complications
One of the primary reasons CoolSculpting is such a popular treatment is the limited range of serious side effects, and complete lack of life-threatening cases. Overall, the chance of negative side effects is much smaller than other fat reduction treatment options, such as liposuction and tummy tucks. Since CoolSculpting is non-invasive, you won’t have to worry about infections, anesthesia complications, scarring, or wounds.
However, you might experience the following in treated areas:
- Mild to moderate pain
- Mild Bruising and tenderness
- Numbness (can occur for up to 6 weeks, and is not a sign of nerve damage)
Although CoolSculpting has been approved by the FDA and administered over 1 million times worldwide, it is not for everyone. If you suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, then you are not a candidate for this procedure.
Results
Once the treated fat cells crystallize, they start being processed naturally, since your body identifies them as dead cells. You may start seeing results within a few weeks of your treatment—and they can continue to improve for up to 6 months. Your results may peak after 2 to 3 months, at which point almost all of the stubborn fat has been processed, creating a much more contoured and sculpted shape.
Although you may feel a renewed vigor to stay in shape and maintain a healthy diet, sometimes weight gain can be inevitable. Luckily, CoolSculpting increases the chance of gaining weight evenly throughout your entire body, rather than just in problem areas, creating a more proportional and aesthetically pleasing look.
