More About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job”, is a corrective nose surgery that enhances a nose’s shape and/or function. Nasal surgery can change:

  • Nose size
  • Nose width
  • Nose profile
  • Nasal tip size and direction
  • Nostril size, width, and direction
  • Nose symmetry

There are two main types of rhinoplasty: primary and revision. Primary rhinoplasty is the first nasal surgery; revision rhinoplasty is any subsequent nasal procedure. Dr. Minniti has experience with both types of surgeries, so if it’s your first time or you want a touch-up, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Minniti right away!

Dr. Minniti's Approach

Dr. Minniti takes a patient-centered approach when it comes to any of his plastic surgeries. He will conduct an in-depth examination, listen to your questions and concerns, and work with you to obtain the best result possible. No rhinoplasty is the same: each rhinoplasty is tailored to the patient’s desires and anatomy,

Surgery

For all rhinoplasties, incisions will be made on the bone and cartilage of the nose. However, depending on the goal of the rhinoplasty, the techniques used will vary.

Sometimes, all incisions will be made within the nasal passageways. In other instances, Dr. Minniti will use external incisions when reducing the size of the nostrils or narrowing the base of the nose. He will use small pieces of skin at the nostril base, making sure to conceal the cuts in the crease between the cheek and nostril.

If the goal is to straighten and narrow the nose, slight modifications of nasal bone positioning may be necessary. Cartilage from the nose or other parts of the body can also be laid upon the nose to increase its size.

Risks & Complications

As with any major surgery, there is a risk of infection, anesthesia reaction, and bleeding. Risks and complications specific to corrective nose surgeries are nosebleeds, discoloration, scarring, swelling, difficulty breathing, numbness and septal perforation.

If you are concerned about these risks, Dr. Minniti will discuss this with you so that you are as informed as possible.

Procedure

During the day of the operation, you will be taken to an outpatient surgery center. Before your surgery, an anesthesiologist will insert an IV into your vein to administer general anesthesia, which will induce sleep. After the surgery, the nurses will monitor you in a recovery area, and you will be given medications to control any pain you may have. They will then place dressings inside each nostril and a splint over your nose for protection.

You could possibly on your way home after just a few hours; however, some patients may stay overnight.

Recovery

You may wear the nasal splint for about a week. There may be bruising and swelling around your eyes, cheeks and nose, which can possibly start to improve about three days after your surgery. However, this may take several weeks to improve. Minor swelling may linger for months, but it may not be noticeable.

Seven to ten days after the procedure, you may be able to return to work. Two to three weeks after your surgery, there may be no recognizable signs that your nose has been reshaped. About three to six weeks after the procedure, you may be able to exercise.

Results

It may take a year for you to see the final results. However, within just a few weeks of your rhinoplasty, you may already be able to enjoy your new look!
